Meet Angela Cathey. She is the finance manager and in charge of accounts payable at Valdez Regional Health Center. She recommends that people interested in her job should take as much math as possible, practice letter writing and communication skills and become very good on computers and 10-key typing. Her job requires her to know how to use the American Health Network, which includes a general ledger and an accounts payable program. She also must know Word Perfect, Excel and be able to check email and access information on the Internet.
Ms. Cathey describes her typical day at work as: Opening mail Reviewing invoices Paying bills Working on the computer to do banking, general ledger and financial statements.
Ms. Cathey says her job is very fulfilling because she enjoys what she does. The challenge she faces everyday is that her work is very detail oriented and she has to be very accurate as she works with numbers. The toughest parts of her job is meeting deadlines, managing large amounts of money, managing her time well and being organized. She suggests that anyone considering this type of work should be a well-rounded learner and take a variety of classes. She also strongly recommends working on team building skills.
Why did Ms. Cathey choose this career? She says she is challenged by numbers and is interested in accounting. She likes a busy day. Working for the Internal Revenue Service, American Express and Lowe's gave her the experience she needed to feel comfortable in accounts payable and as the financial manager.
