Time frame: one class period to get data, one to compile the data

Alaska State Content Standards:

English/Language Arts

A. A student should be able to speak and write well for a variety of
purposes and audiences.

A student who meets the content standard should:
1. Apply elements of effective writing and speaking; these elements include ideas, organization, vocabulary, sentence structure, and personal style;

Mathematics
B A student should understand and be able to select and use a variety of problem-solving strategies.

A student who meets the content standard should:

3) Formulate mathematical problems that arise from everyday situations.

Overview:

Student will use network searches to find costs of education/training for their chosen pathway.

Objectives:

Student will

Research career pathways and make comparisons in education, training and requirements for employment

Compare expectations to possibilities

Resources/Materials:
Computer access teacher guidance

Vocabulary:

Network, global survey, resources, grant, loan, projected cost, expectation

Classroom Setting: very flexible, depending on computers available

Prerequisite: Student knows which pathway they hope to enter.

Activity:

On the computer, student will create a spreadsheet or table in a wordprocessing program to show results of the research of two jobs from their chosen pathway.  They will compare education requirements, training and cost.

Student will create a folder for information from each source.  They will list sources and give reasons for choosing their source.

Students will make copies of information on each job and save in their portfolios
